Who are the F1 2026 Power Unit Manufacturers?

The 2026 regulations have successfully attracted a wealth of manufacturer talent. There are now five distinct power unit suppliers on the grid:


  • Mercedes: Supplying their works team, Williams, Alpine, and the reigning champions McLaren.
  • Ferrari: Powering the Scuderia, Haas, and the new American entrant Cadillac.

What is the difference between a "Power Unit" and an "Engine"?

While you can still call it an engine, the term Power Unit (PU) describes the entire integrated system. The 2026 PU consists of the Internal Combustion Engine (ICE), the Turbocharger (TC), the Energy Store (ES), the Control Electronics (CE), and the Motor-Generator Unit (MGU-K).


What happened to the MGU-H?

The MGU-H (Heat) has been deleted for 2026. While technically impressive, it was complex and lacked road-car relevance. To compensate, F1 has massively upgraded the MGU-K (Kinetic). The electrical power has jumped from 120kW to 350kW, meaning the hybrid system now provides nearly 50% of the car's total power.


What is the new "Boost Button" in F1 2026?

Formerly known as various energy deployment modes, the Boost Button is a driver-operated function. It allows a driver to deploy maximum electrical energy at any point on the track to either attack a rival or defend a position, provided they have enough charge in the battery.


How does "Overtake Mode" replace DRS?

Overtake Mode is the new primary performance aid. Unlike the old DRS, it is a power-based advantage rather than an aerodynamic one. It can only be activated if a driver is within one second of the car ahead at the detection point.


Overtake Mode allows the chasing driver to sustain 350kW of electrical power all the way to 337 km/h, while the lead car's power begins to "taper off" at 290 km/h.


Understanding "Recharge" and Energy Harvesting

Energy management is the defining skill of 2026. Drivers harvest energy to charge their battery (Recharge) through braking, part-throttle application, and "lift and coast."
